How to use the tip calculator

Enter the bill amount, choose a tip percentage or type your own, and set how many people are sharing the bill. The calculator shows the tip, the total and how much each person pays. You can also round the amount up to the next dollar to make paying easier.

How the tip is calculated

Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100, total = bill + tip, and each person pays total ÷ number of people.

Example: an $86.00 bill with an 18% tip gives a tip of $15.48 and a total of $101.48. Split between two people, each pays $50.74.

How much to tip in the U.S.

  • Sit-down restaurants: 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill; 20% or more for excellent service.
  • Bars: about $1 to $2 per drink or 15% to 20% of the tab.
  • Food delivery: 10% to 20%, with a few dollars minimum.
  • Taxi and rideshare: 10% to 20%.
  • Hair salons and spas: 15% to 20%.
  • Hotel housekeeping: a few dollars per night.

Tipping around the world

Customs differ a lot by country. In much of Europe a service charge is often included and rounding up or leaving 5% to 10% is common. In Japan and South Korea tipping is not expected. When traveling, check whether service is already on the bill before adding a tip.

Quick mental math

For 10%, move the decimal point one place to the left: 10% of $86 is $8.60. Double it for 20% ($17.20), or add half of it for 15% ($12.90).

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the bill before or after tax?

Etiquette guides usually suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. The difference is small.

How do I split a bill with a tip?

Enter the number of people. The calculator divides the total, including the tip, equally between them.

What is a good tip at a restaurant?

In the U.S., 15% to 20% of the bill for table service is standard, and 20% or more for excellent service.

What does rounding up do?

It rounds each person's share up to the next whole dollar, which makes paying in cash easier. The extra goes to the tip.
